☆ Private jets of Russian oligarchs keep flying but not to Europe

The Boeing linked to Yevtushenkov was among at least 50 private jets re-registered under the Russian flag since the February 2022 invasion, according to previously unreported national aircraft registry data up to early August reviewed by Reuters. Several of the repatriated private jets were associated with prominent politicians and business figures, according to two senior Russian aviation industry sources, who were not authorised to speak to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity. Because of sanctions, Russian planes are prohibited from entering the 27-country European Union, where Russia's oligarchs previously flew frequently for business and leisure and where many private jets linked to them were registered before the war, tail numbers show. VEB, Uralkali and Mazepin did not respond to requests for comment on the registration of the jets in Russia.

Nikita Mazepin, 24, is trying to overturn the British sanctions so he can negotiate with Formula One teams to return to the sport in 2024. Mazepin is also challenging EU and Canadian sanctions as part of his attempt to return to Formula One. Scott said in court filings that Europe's second-highest court temporarily lifted some EU sanctions in March, allowing him to attend a specialist training facility in Italy. However, lawyers representing Britain's Foreign Office argued that Mazepin could still negotiate with Formula One teams with the sanctions in place. Another hearing is expected to take place in June to decide whether sanctions can be temporarily lifted pending Mazepin's full challenge, which will be heard in July.

Jan 29 (Reuters) - Ukraine imposed sanctions against 182 Russian and Belarusian companies, and three individuals, in the latest of a series of steps by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to block Moscow's and Minsk's connections to his country. "Their assets in Ukraine are blocked, their properties will be used for our defence," Zelenskiy said in a video address. The sanctioned companies chiefly engage in the transportation of goods, vehicle leasing and chemical production, according to the list published by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. The list includes Russian potash fertiliser producer and exporter Uralkali, Belarus state-owned potash producer Belaruskali, Belarusian Railways, as well as Russia's VTB-Leasing and Gazprombank Leasing both dealing with transport leasing. Ukraine has sanctioned hundreds of Russian and Belarusian individuals and firms since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February last year.

At a meeting with Russian businessman Dmitry Mazepin, who gave up control of fertiliser producer Uralchem-Uralkali after he was hit by EU sanctions in March, Putin said Russia was ready to increase its fertiliser exports. "The main problem was probably the fact that quite a lot of fertiliser was frozen in European ports," Mazepin said at the meeting, which was shown on state TV. There are 262,000 tonnes of Uralchem's fertiliser frozen in ports of Estonia, Latvia, Belgium and the Netherlands, he said. Other producers, Acron and Eurochem, have 52,000 tonnes and almost 100,000 tonnes of their fertiliser stuck in Europe, respectively. Mazepin also asked for Putin's further help with resumption of Russian ammonia exports via a pipeline running from Russia through Ukraine to the Black Sea.

US officials asked major banks to maintain ties with Russian companies, Bloomberg reportedIts report said banks were asked to keep dealing with firms that are partly exempt from sanctions. The Russian firms included state-run gas giant Gazprom and fertilizer producer Uralkali PJSC, sources told Bloomberg. In a congressional hearing on September 21, CEOs of major US banks came under scrutiny for their dealings in Russia. Leaders of major Western banks have been condemned by Ukrainian officials, who said in July that they would pursue war-crimes charges against them. "In our logic, everybody who is financing these war criminals who are doing these terrible things in Ukraine are also committing war crimes," he added.
